Notes and Caveats
All of our posts on relationships, unless dealing specifically with dysfunction, assume that both people are relatively sane and willing to work together. It should be understood that a relationship is a two-way street. If you are the only one putting in effort in a marriage, it’s possible that your spouse has a personality disorder, in which case there is nothing you can do to help them and scant hope for improvement.
Any advice given on this blog should be taken with a ‘take it or leave it’ attitude. We are not psychologists but do believe that there are many who can claim this title who are quacks. Your mileage may vary, of course.
The masculine pronoun is often used as a universal here.
